The 20 Rising Stars of Hedge Funds

Institutional Investor News' inaugural issue of Rising Stars of Hedge Funds presents 20 up-and-coming executives from around the world who are likely to impact the global hedge fund and alternative investment industry.

Nominees are submitted by industry professionals and are vetted and selected by our editorial staff. The winners meet the following criteria: they are 45-years-old or under and have demonstrated expertise, dedication and a consistency in their career, indicating they will likely set the trends for the future of the industry.

Our winning nominees manage and contribute to the management of funds at firms overseeing a total of more than $130 billion in assets and investments across an array of sectors, including healthcare and technology. They have specializations in a host of investment vehicles including: absolute return, convertible arbitrage, fixed-income and mortgage backed securities. Their investment strategies range from long/short to market neutral.

Other noteworthy points about our Rising Stars:

• 55% work in New York City, 10% in London and 10% in Asia [the remainder work elsewhere in the U.S.];
• 50% work at firms that are Securities and Exchange Commission-registered investment advisors, including two nominees outside the U.S.;
• 40% founded or co-founded their firms;
• The average age of nominees is 37 (the youngest being 28 years old and the eldest being 42);
• Women represent 20% of the overall group;
• One nominee is an M.D. and another did not attend college;
• Their firms manage from less than $100 million to more than $60 billion in assets.

Selecting the final 20 Rising Stars is a difficult task. Many outstanding individuals were nominated. We thank the nominees and those who did the nominating for making this list possible and look forward to charting the professional progress of these Rising Stars in the years to come.
